19th Century Continental School Watercolour: The Jungfrau, from the Wengern Alp, Switzerland
A finely detailed 19th century watercolour landscape depicting The Jungfrau mountain as viewed from the Wengern Alp in Switzerland. This evocative alpine scene features towering snow-capped peaks in the background, with fir trees in the foreground dusted with snow. A small stream runs beneath a rustic wooden bridge, where two figures are shown pausing on a mountain path, adding a narrative charm and sense of scale.
The work is executed with great precision and atmospheric depth, capturing the majesty of the Bernese Oberland. The title is inscribed to the gilt slip: “The Jungfrau, from the Wengern Alp, Switzerland.” Unsigned, but in the manner of popular 19th century Swiss and German topographical artists.
Presented under glass in an ornate gilt composition frame with acanthus corners and foliate moulding. Frame with areas of wear and small losses, commensurate with age.
