E. Needham (British School), 1802: Portrait of Thomas Maltby, Banker of Nottingham
A formal early 19th century oil on canvas portrait of Thomas Maltby (1751–1830), banker of Nottingham and Justice of the Peace for the County of Nottinghamshire, depicted half-length in dark attire with white stock against a shadowed background.
The sitter is identified verso in a handwritten inscription:
“THOMAS MALTBY / BANKER OF NOTTINGHAM / J.P. FOR COUNTY OF NOTTS / BORN AT HOVERINGHAM 1751 – DIED 1830.”
The painting is signed and dated verso:
“E. Needham. pinx. 1802”, indicating the artist and year of execution. The work displays a restrained and solemn character typical of English provincial portraiture of the Georgian period.
Presented in a period giltwood frame with rope twist inner moulding; the frame has wear and losses consistent with age. The canvas exhibits craquelure, scattered abrasions and surface wear, but retains much of its original presence.
