19th Century British School Oil on Canvas: Royal Navy Ironclad in Heavy Seas

A dramatic 19th century oil on canvas marine painting depicting a Royal Navy ironclad warship under steam and sail, navigating turbulent waters against a stormy sky. The vessel, possibly a mid-Victorian screw-driven ironclad or steam frigate, is shown with gunports open and three masts rigged, flying signal flags and the White Ensign.

The dark, moody palette and expressive handling of sky and sea heighten the sense of atmosphere and movement, capturing the might and resilience of Britain’s naval power during the industrial age. A rocky coastline looms in the distance beneath brooding cloud cover.

Canvas dimensions approx. 76cm x 52cm.
Unframed. The painting shows overall wear with areas of surface rubbing, paint loss, craquelure, and staining, particularly in the lower quarter. Despite its condition, the piece retains a strong presence and maritime appeal.
