After Philip James de Loutherbourg RA (French/British, 1740–1812), 19th century
A View near Matlock, Derbyshire, with Figures Working beneath a Wooden Conveyor
oil on canvas, unsigned, a reduced and horizontally reversed version of the composition painted by de Loutherbourg in 1785, depicting an engine employed for drawing water from a lead mine near Matlock Bath, within a moulded gilt-composition frame, the reverse bearing the trade label of S. Boswell, Carver, Gilder, Picture Frame Maker and Fine Art Dealer, Oxford House, Cardiff Road, Newport, Mon., established 1888, approximately 62 × 46cm overall.

Catalogue note: De Loutherbourg’s original was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1785 under the title An Engine to Draw the Water Out of a Lead Mine near Matlock Bath, Derbyshire. An aquatint and etching after the painting was produced by Joseph Constantine Stadler and published by Robert Bowyer in 1800. The reversed arrangement of the present work suggests that it was probably derived from a reproductive print rather than copied directly from the original painting. British Museum record.

Condition: The painted surface is considerably darkened by surface dirt and discoloured varnish, with craquelure, abrasions and possible old restoration. Not examined out of the frame. The frame has extensive rubbing, cracking and scattered losses; the paper covering on the reverse is torn and incomplete.
