Early 19th Century Eight-Day Longcase Clock by Oram of Castle Cary, Somerset

An early 19th century oak-cased longcase clock, the painted square dial signed “Oram, Castle Cary”, with black Arabic numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, calendar aperture and floral decoration to the corners. The dial is fitted with decorative pierced hands and twin winding holes, indicating an eight-day movement.

The hood has a shaped swan-neck pediment with brass mounts and central brass finial, flanked by slender dark columns with brass capitals and bases. The long oak trunk incorporates a rectangular door with decorative inlay above, over a panelled base.

Research identifies Thomas Oram of Castle Cary, Somerset as a clockmaker associated with early 19th century longcase clocks, with comparable examples dated circa 1810–1830.

Accompanied by two cast iron weights, pendulum and winding key.

Dimensions: Approx. 209 cm high × 48 cm wide × 25 cm deep.

Condition: Antique used condition with age-related wear, marks and surface deterioration. The painted dial displays craquelure, staining and wear. Case has general knocks, scratches and colour variation consistent with age. Movement has not been tested and working order cannot be guaranteed. Pendulum, two weights and winding key are present.
