Selling at Wincanton Auctions

Wincanton Auctions offers a professional, friendly, and approachable auction service for individuals, executors, and businesses looking to sell a wide range of items, from single pieces to full collections and estates.

While we are proudly based in Wincanton, items sold through Wincanton Auctions benefit from regional, national, and international exposure, ensuring they are seen by the widest possible audience of buyers.

Our Reach & Marketing

All live auctions at Wincanton Auctions are conducted both in the saleroom and online, giving sellers access to a large and active buying audience.

Through our online bidding partner Easy Live Auction, our sales are exposed to a network of over 675,000 registered bidders worldwide, alongside our own established client base built up over many years.

This combination of:

  • Live room bidding

  • Online live-streamed bidding

  • Absentee and timed bidding

means that items are not limited to local interest, and often attract competitive bidding from buyers well beyond the local area.

What We Sell

We accept a wide variety of items suitable for auction, including antiques, collectables, furniture, artwork, jewellery, and general household items.

Some items may not be suitable for auction, and in certain cases we may recommend an alternative approach. We encourage sellers to contact us in advance, or to provide photographs, so we can advise before items are brought in.

How to Sell

Items may be entered into:

  • Live auctions

  • Timed auctions

  • Private treaty sales, where appropriate

The most suitable method of sale is agreed with the auctioneer and will depend on the nature, value, and quantity of items.

Seller’s Commission & Fees

Our standard seller’s charges are:

  • Commission: 20% plus VAT, subject to a minimum commission of £3 plus VAT per lot

  • Lotting fee: £3 plus VAT per individual item or group

  • Portable Appliance Testing (PAT): £3 plus VAT per applicable electrical item

These charges contribute towards the cost of cataloguing, photography, marketing, administration, and the running of the auction.

Guide Values & Lotting

As a general guide, we aim for items entered for auction — whether individually or as a group — to have a realistic expectation of achieving £25 or more.

In cases such as full house clearances, probate estates, or larger consignments, lower-value lots may be accepted at the auctioneer’s discretion.

From 2026, we will no longer be able to accept reserve prices on individual items with an anticipated value below £100.

Items expected to sell below this level will be offered without reserve and sold for the best price achievable on the day. We will continue to carefully assess and group items where appropriate in order to maximise sale potential, but sellers must be comfortable with items under £100 being sold without reserve. Full details can be found in our Download Sellers Pack Wincanton Auctions 2026J1726_.docx

Unsold Lots, Re-Offering & Re-Lotting Fees

If a lot does not sell in a live auction, the following options may apply unless you advise us otherwise:

  • The item may be re-offered in the next live auction, usually at a reduced starting price and without reserve

  • A re-lotting fee of £3 plus VAT applies when an item is re-offered in a live auction

  • Items entered into a timed second-chance auction are not subject to a re-lotting fee

Important Note on Unsold Lot Charges

On rare occasions, where system-generated charges result in a negative balance for unsold lots, this may appear on your account.

It is not the policy of Wincanton Auctions to enforce a negative balance caused solely by unsold lot charges, and any such balance will be adjusted and waived in practice.

Private Treaty Sales

In some cases, unsold items may be sold by private treaty following the auction.

Private treaty sales are handled at the auctioneer’s discretion, and any applicable terms will be explained in advance.

Probate, House Clearance & Estates

We regularly handle probate valuations, estate clearances, and larger consignments.

Our service can include:

  • Professional probate valuations for estate and HMRC purposes

  • Advice on the most appropriate method of sale

  • Sale of items through auction where suitable

Settlement & Payment to Sellers

After the auction:

  • Sale proceeds are settled once payment has been received from the buyer

  • Settlement is normally made within 14 working days after the end of the sale

  • All agreed fees and charges are deducted before payment is made

  • A detailed settlement statement is provided for your records

We aim to settle accounts as promptly as possible and will always keep you informed if there are any delays.

Transport to the saleroom (seller deliveries)
Wincanton Auctions does not collect items from private addresses. If your items have been accepted for auction and an appointment has been agreed, transport to the saleroom is usually arranged via an independent courier. The following companies regularly handle auction deliveries and are listed on our website:

Items must be agreed and an appointment confirmed before delivery.
